lou dimuro was an american umpire from 1963 until his death during the 1982 season. he was hit by a car and killed while walking back to his hotel after dinner while in texas to work a series between the rangers and white sox.
his fellow umpires retired his number 16 (since un-retired for dimuro's son mike) and wore black armbands in his memory. the armband is visible on the umpire behind joe nolan on nolan's 1983 donruss card
dimuro may best remembered as the umpire who awarded cleon jones first base in the 1969 world series after being shown what may have been shoe polish on the ball that gil hodges thought had hit jones.
