hail the mail!

i enjoy getting mail.  i always have.  over the last few years, i have especially enjoyed seeing self addressed stamped envelopes in the mailbox.  that's because they usually contain autographed cards.  the most recent of these envelopes came from the twins' spring training home thanks to former dodger pitcher ricky nolasco.  i had sent a copy of his 2014 topps card
and his 2013 topps update card
to fort myers in the hopes that he would sign them, and he did!  what's even more awesome about this is that it fills the requirement of my topps dodger autograph project for 2014.  as you might recall, i tried to secure at least one signed dodger card (ideally freely obtained through the mail) for each topps flagship set, starting with the 1951 red/blue backs, without repeating a player.  now, i could count nolasco's 2013 topps update card as part of the project (i don't consider update series official requirements of the project, but note them if i have them), but i don't know if i will send out any other 2014 cards so i will skip the update set for now.

here's the updated tally of the project, by the way.

there was a similar pwe in my mailbox a few days prior to the nolasco envelope.  it contained a 1964 topps dick calmus card
signed by the former dodger pitcher and returned in just a few days.  unfortunately, there aren't any other topps cards of calmus (he has a card in the 1968 set, but is featured as a cub) so i just sent the one.

like nolasco, some of the players noted above as part of the topps dodger autograph project signed more than one card, and i realized that i have not shown some of them.

edwin jackson is part of the project thanks to his 2004 topps card, but he also signed a 2005 card for me.
likewise, delwyn young is up there for his 2008 topps card, but he also signed a 2003 topps 206
and a 2007 topps card
as did juan pierre, who made the project thanks to a 2010 topps ttm success.
pierre also signed one of his 2008 upper deck cards
probably my favorite card of his, as well as his 2009 topps card
not all dodger ttm successes made the project, obviously, and here is one that fell short - a 2007 topps luis gonzalez
last, but not least, is a card that is ineligible for the project (it's not a topps card), but is a cool ttm success nonetheless - a 2007 upper deck mike lieberthal card
thanks to all for signing my cards! and thanks also to the mailman for delivering the mail!

a mayoral memorial patch

bob o'connor was the 58th mayor of pittsburgh.  he began his term in january of 2006, and just a few months later was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer.  he passed away on september 1, 2006.  for the remainder of the season, the pirates wore a 'bob' patch on their jerseys.  you can see it on brian rogers' 2007 upper deck card
along with the all-star game patch.  sadly, o'connor was diagnosed just a day before his city hosted the midsummer classic.  o'connor had mentioned the all-star game in his inaugural address as a motivator to 'redd up' the city, but he was unable to attend the game due to his illness.

this 2007 upper deck ultimate collection ian snell card
will represent the bob o'connor memorial patch in the collection.

more cards rescued from the lcs

these cards all came from a dime box at one of the two local card shops in the twin cities.  i spent a few minutes digging through the boxes in the front of the store and found some cards for some of my collections.

this 1998 donruss preferred rickey henderson
doesn't really fit any of my current collections (although i used to have a pc of rickey), but i couldn't pass up a rickey card showing him in an angels uni.  besides, it has that o-pee-chee-esque text on the back
i did pick up a few vladdys for my neglected pc - 1999 upper deck
2005 fleer ultra - base
and insert
2007 upper deck
2009 upper deck team leaders
and a 2010 upper deck biography card
you would think that the card is all about matt garza.  it's not too often that you see the pitcher in focus while the batter trots around the bases on a baseball card.  i like it.

i grabbed another angel card from the box, thinking it might be a double play.  upon further inspection, this 2010 topps brandon wood card is not a dp turn
on this particular play, there were two outs with michael young on first.  wood fielded the grounder hit by marlon byrd and threw to first to end the inning (thanks baseball reference - also confirmed by getty images).  the card does show the nick adenhart memorial patch, but i've got vladdy representing that in the binder.

most of my other sub-collections were added to - here's a 1992 fleer kenny lofton card featuring an image from dodger stadium
and here's a lurking mike scioscia on a 2004 upper deck sweet spot classic card of gary carter
it's a very similar image to that which was used on carter's fantastic final tribute from 1993 score select. speaking of 1993 score select, here's brian harper's card from that set, featuring a lurking mark mcgwire
but the best play at the plate card i found was this 1992 upper deck johnny bench baseball heroes card
those are all good cards, but i don't think they are enough to lure me back to this particular lcs.  you see, when i asked to look through some non-dime boxes that were held behind the counter, i was instead pointed to a desktop computer that they had set up.  i was welcome to check their inventory online, and if they had the card i was looking for, they would be happy to pull it for me.  well, i was just wanting to browse through some mid-2000's ultra looking for dodger stadium shots or double plays.  their online database couldn't help me there.  besides, there was already a frustrated patron trying to use the computer at the time.  i did ask for a 1974 topps card that i needed at the time to complete my set - they looked it up, but didn't have it.

i understand that online sales are a big part of the card business - i do most of my shopping and all of my selling online - but it was a turnoff for me to experience that in a brick and mortar lcs.  i may purchase cards from this shop in the future, but if i do, it will be through sportlots.

i am also thankful for cards that show the double play turn at second base

and i am especially thankful for cub season ticket holders that broke their sga sets and sold them as singles for low prices.  that's how i got this 2013 topps cubs season ticket holder giveaway glenn beckert card
thanks to wrigley wax for bringing this card to my attention.

also from 2013, but more widely available, is a 2013 topps allen & ginter dan uggla card
horizontal a&g isn't the best.

here's a 2012 topps jason kipnis.
i've shown a couple of other versions of this card, but never the regular ol' base. until today.

here's a 2012 topps pro debut jeremy patton card
i believe that the muckdogs are in the cardinal organization. i saw this one while digging through comc one day.  it was cheaper on sportlots, though.

how about a 2009 bowman draft picks & prospects brian dozier?
doze made the move to second this past season and did alright.  2014 is his 'year 27' season, and i've got him on my sleeper list for my fantasy draft next year.

now is the time when we see some chone figgins cards - 2008 upper deck first edition
and 2005 donruss
here's fellow angel darin erstad, although he's on miguel tejada's 2007 upper deck team checklist card
and i will end the post with some phillies.  first, cole hamels on a 2008 topps stadium club card (a 1st day issue parallel)
next, a couple of jimmy rollins cards - 2005 upper deck first pitch
and 2004 upper deck
it seems like double play cards are cropping up at every turn.  i am thankful to the bloggers who send me new ones in trade packages (and emails with links to images of dp cards) - someday i will catch up and get my 'have' list to match my actual haves!

a memorial patch for tom cheek

last weekend, the widow of former blue jays' broadcaster tom cheek accepted the ford c. frick award from the national baseball hall of fame on his behalf.  cheek had broadcast every blue jays game from their inaugural contest in 1977 until the 2004 season when he took some time off after his father's death.  later that year, cheek was diagnosed with a brain tumor.  he passed away in 2005.  he is perhaps best known south of the border for his call of joe carter's world series winning home run in 1993.

in 2006, the blue jays wore a patch to honor their broadcaster.  they wore a white patch on their black jerseys and a black patch on their home whites.

here is a 2006 fleer tradition bj ryan card that shows the white patch.
hard to tell for sure, but i assume that ryan is also wearing a breast cancer pin.

another example is the 2006 upper deck francisco rosario card
but the card that will represent the white patch in the binder is this 2007 upper deck vernon wells card (sent to me by jeff of 2x3 heroes)
as for the black patch version, no card is better than this one, frank catalanotto's 2007 upper deck card
that might be even better than the rod beck/harry caray card.

here's to you tom cheek, and congratulations on the frick award.

one good turn deserves a few more

yes, it's double play time.  here's troy tulowitzki's 2013 topps archives card.
if it looks familiar, i might have shown it in one of my archives posts from a few weeks back, as well as my series two post since it's the same photo that was used for his 1972 mini insert.

going back in time to 2004 fleer tradition with omar vizquel
and further back to 1997 fleer ultra with delino deshields
it wasn't until recently that i realized that, in 1997 at least, the ultra gold medallion cards weren't just parallels of the base set - they had completely different photos.

now on to the jimmy rollins portion of the post.  rollins turns two on his 2003 bowman card
his 2005 upper deck card
and his 2005 fleer ultra card
and teammate placido polanco does the turn on his 2005 topps opening day card
back to 1998 with pinnacle and craig biggio
and carlos baerga (plus a sliding ryne sandberg)
here's a 2007 upper deck david eckstein
a 2008 upper deck first edition rickie weeks
and a 2008 topps stadium club dustin pedroia
i have picked up a number of new-to-me double play cards over the past few months.  once i get my posts and lists up to date, i will commence with the greatest double play card of all-time tournament.  for reals.
