it wasn't until recently that i realized that, in 1997 at least, the ultra gold medallion cards weren't just parallels of the base set - they had completely different photos.

i have picked up a number of new-to-me double play cards over the past few months.  once i get my posts and lists up to date, i will commence with the greatest double play card of all-time tournament.  for reals.

four for 10

i took a quick look through a couple of auto/relic discount boxes at the card show on friday.  i found a certified cesar izturis auto (who knew?) but couldn't find two other items to make the 3 for $10 worth my while.  i suppose i could have purchased the auto on its own, but...meh.

later on, i came across a box with autos and relics priced at 4 for $10 and had slightly better luck.  i found this ivan dejesus jr. jersey card from 2012 topps

and had to have it since it looks like it's from a game where the dodgers wore those baby blue brooklyn uniforms.  first impression?  awesome.

speaking of awesome, i found a hong-chih kuo relic.  who knew such things existed?  this one is from 2008 upper deck ballpark collection

and features kenji johjima of the mariners.  kuo is taiwanese and johjima is japanese, but there must be a common thread, right richard p. mcwilliams?  anyway, i saw the other day that the mariners released kuo which is too bad because he had some lights out times for the dodgers.  i suppose i better go ahead and showcase the ttm success i had with him sometime last year as the chances of him landing with some other team is probably pretty slim.

i feel for the guy who bought a pack for $40 or whatever and had to sell the relics for essentially $2.50.  vladdy go boom on that guy's balance sheet.  still, my appreciation of this wanes, and although i was a big fan of vladdy's over the last 10 years or so, this card is available if anyone wishes to trade for it.

the fourth card i snagged from the box was a 2003 bowman auto from pirates' closer joel hanrahan

his certified auto looks a lot like the one on my 2002 topps traded card that i sent to hanrahan a couple of seasons ago,

so that makes me feel good.  just like finding cards in bargain bins.  even the shiny ones.

loneys from heaven

i have been lax in doing trade posts this year.  it's not because i don't appreciate the cards that have come in to my possession, it's more laziness on my part.  with the year half over, it's time to get busy posting about trades.  here are some cards i received from cardboard heaven a while back

the main card of the trade was this 2003 bowman james loney autograph

james was just a kid in 2003, and the dodgers brought in fred mcgriff to man first after trading eric karros to the cubs.  add in a transplanted shawn grene, a season of hee seop choi, and a year of nomar, and you get to big game james in dodger first base lineage.  here he is all grown up on a 2010 bowman chrome card

i also received a 2005 topps updates & highlights matt kemp card

at one of the dodger/twins games this week, a guy in front of me was touting kemp as the next triple crown winner.  i think it is possible, though not likely, but wonder whether that guy bothered to vote for kemp in the all-star voting. probably not. the fact that kemp is not in the top 3 outfielders in terms of voting is pretty crazy.

i was a bit disappointed sands got sent down.  i was looking forward to seeing him in minny, but the way tony gwynn jr played, i guess i can't complain too much.

2004 topps chrome robin ventura black refractor

this card (the topps flagship version) is in my header image.  it's a great card even before it gets all black, chromey and refractorish.  jeromy burnitz lurking and a semi-favorite non-dodger as a dodger robin ventura sliding in.  awesome card.

2006 topps allen & ginter mini danys baez

yes, danys baez was a dodger.  ned had a fascination with devil rays for a while, and he sent edwin jackson, dioner navarro, and my former baseball salvation joel guzman out east for baez, lance carter and not much else.  baez was later traded to the braves for wilson betemit, who was traded a year after that for scott proctor, who they had traded to the yankees to get robin ventura.  the circle of life...

2003 bowman koyie hill auto

hill was with the dodgers for just 3 games in 2003 before being traded to the diamondbacks for steve finley late in the 2004 season.

2007 bowman chris parmelee auto

parmelee is one of the twinkies top offensive prospects.  not sure where he's going to play if they keep their core together - maybe dh?
