i suppose i am a garvey junkie

here are a few more cards that were sent my way from the bayou, courtesy of the junior junkie.  first up is a 1985 fleer super star special card featuring steve garvey and fellow padre goose gossage
goose blew the save in game 4 of the 1984 nlcs, but that was the game in which garvey hit a walk-off home run to force the decisive game 5.  in that game, garvey (the nlcs mvp) drew an important walk to set up a couple of sac flies, and later drove in the game's final run, while gossage recorded the save and the pads were on to the world series. those yellow bp jerseys are hideous, by the way.

here's a 2002 fleer box score pee wee reese card
i am pretty sure that these cards were sold in a box set, and featured only hall of famers.  i recall buying the box from one of the local card shops and then being disappointed that pee wee was the only dodgers in the cooperstown subset.

2011 bowman chrome draf picks and prospects josh lindblom refractor
lindblom has bounced around since the dodgers traded him to the phillies for shane victorino in 2012.  the phillies dealt him to texas prior to the 2013 season in the michael young deal, and then they sent him to the a's for michael choice a year later.  he pitched in one game for the a's last season.

2014 bowman andre ethier
have we seen the last of ethier in dodger blue? i would guess not, unless the dodgers eat a sizable part of that contract ned doled out.

2014 topps allen & ginter hyun-jin ryu
and duke snider
it's nice to see the duke in la dodger gear once in a while.

thanks for the cards tj - from one junkie to another!

what's this guy doing here?

i recently picked up a few lots of dodger autos and relics on the cheap.  in amongst the dodger goodness of one lot was this 2011 bowman platinum auto of clint robinson
clint robinson happens to be a member of the kansas city royals' organization.  he debuted this past season and was dfa'd just a few days ago.  bummer.

on to the dodger stuff - there was this 2009 topps 206 autograph of scott elbert
i get elbert and eric stults mixed up all the time.  elbert is still with the dodgers while stults is down in san diego.

there were also a couple of cards from 2009 topps ticket to stardom.  first, here's a chad billingsley jersey and ticket stub card
topps makes this too easy.  on june 22, 2008, chad billingsley got the win against the indians.  i was totally not expecting that - kudos to topps for matching up the ticket stub with the appropriate player.  as an aside, the dodgers' starting second baseman that day was someone named luis maza.

now let's check out this russell martin card from the same set
on june 10, 2008, russell martin was 3 for 5 with 3 rbi as the dodgers beat the padres 7-2.  not sure who's rear that is on the padres' ticket stub, but greg maddux started the game for the pads.  the leg kick looks too high to be maddux.  the dodgers' starter that evening was clayton kershaw, who was making his 4th career start.  neither pitcher figured in the decision.

here's a 2009 tristar projections josh lindblom auto
tristar did not project that lindblom would be traded to the phillies for a shane victorino rental.

also from 2009, here's an upper deck sp authentic james mcdonald autographed card
hindsight is 20/20, but this was another bad trade by ned. he sent mcdonald and andrew lambo to the pirates in 2010 for octavio dotel.  a month and a half later, ned flipped dotel to the rockies for a non-prospect minor league outfielder.

here's a prospect that ned hasn't traded away yet - angelo songco - on a 2001 donruss elite card
songco might make the jump to aa this year.  i hope he is able to bounce back from his leg injury that limited his production last year.

finally, we have an andre ethier relic card from 2011 topps update
it's from one of those workout jerseys that only exist to populate relic cards that wind up going for cheap in a team lot.  like this one.

did jeff kent sub for steve garvey?

check out the back of this 2006 upper deck spx insert card.  it's got some good all-star info on none other than steven patrick garvey, the mvp-winning, gold glove obtaining, consecutive game playing, errorless streak fielding, 200-hit hitting, and don sutton scuffling dodger first baseman that i built a quarter of this blog around.
here's the front.  with a photo of...jeff kent?
now, i get that this is a 'spxtra info' insert, and it has some generic dodger information, such as their all-time record and a factoid about the number of championships they have won.  still, the lack of a first name in the text on the back leads me to believe that garvey was the intended player to be featured on the front.  why the switch to the barry bonds brawling, motorcycle crashing, not truck washing, milton bradley offending dodger second baseman i do not know.  i am disappointed at the prospect of having one less steve garvey card in my collection, however.

still, i am happy to have this card to call my own, thanks to a trade with the dutch card guy.  he also sent these other cards along, including another dodger second baseman.
both the auto and this gold parallel card
are from the 2009 topps update set.  it was the hudson auto that i saw on the trade bait page that prompted the trade.  as you may recall, hudson does not sign dodger related items.  that is his prerogative, but the joke is on him when topps slaps his stickers all over cards showing him in a dodger uniform.

also included in the package was this 2009 bowman chrome prospects (i think? bowman confuses me with their set names) josh lindblom auto.
this is my first auto, and may be the first card in my collection of the dodger reliever, period.  it's real nice.

and, what is this? a 1989 fleer card that i did not previously own?
yeah, this 1989 fleer superstars card of kirk gibson did not look at all familiar to me.  i really hope that there aren't anymore like this floating around because the thought of actively pursuing 1989 fleer issued cards does not excite me in the least.

i was excited about this 2011 topps finest jerry sands card
because i did not purchase any finest cards last year.  or the year before.  i pretty much rely on the kindness of traders to obtain them.  kind of like bowman.  i don't buy bowman, but i appreciate it when i get them in trades.  it's fun to find out who the kids down on the farm are, like andre ethier's little brother devon.
he's struggling in the rookie league this year, but the purple-ness of this card makes me not care too much about that.

it's a pretty even bet that any trade i complete will include a shawn green card.  he was the last dodger to be featured in pretty much every set and insert set until kemp and kershaw came along.  this is a 2002 topps stadium club 'beam team' insert
i am not sure what the 'beam team' was or if they had a secret clubhouse with advanced weaponry.  it sounds like a saturday morning cartoon, and not the kind today where kids have to learn while they are watching tv.

last but not least, a 2005 donruss elite adrian beltre 'passing the torch' card
i don't know what donruss intended here, as beltre left the dodgers to join the mariners for the 2005 season.  perhaps he was meant to have been shown alongside norihiro nakamura, the guy the dodgers mistakenly thought could play third base and hit major league pitching.

here's a bonus question - name the player who spent the most time at third base for the dodgers in 2005.    bet you can't do it without cheating.

thanks for the trade jeroen!
