another clayton kershaw through the mail success!

you've seen these popping up around the blogosphere over the last week or so, and yesterday i received my signed card from the reigning national league mvp and cy young award winner, clayton kershaw.  i had sent him a 2013 topps update card last year, and now here it is signed by the man himself

this is the second year in a row that kershaw has apparently cleared out his ttm request pile just before the start of spring training.  he also added a note about his 'kershaw's challenge', which you can learn more about at kershawschallenge.com.  this year, he is partnering with cure, arise africa, la dream center, and mercy street in dallas to improve lives in la, dallas, and lusaka, zambia.  he's a cool dude.

this also allows me to fill a spot in my topps dodger autograph project for 2013 topps update.  as you might recall, i tried to secure at least one signed dodger card (ideally freely obtained through the mail) for each topps flagship set, starting with the 1951 red/blue backs, without repeating a player.  i don't officially consider update sets to be a part of the project, but i note them if i have them.  now, i also have a ricky nolasco 2013 topps update card that was signed through the mail, but i used him for the 2014 set's entry.

through the mail thursday - randy wolf, bo mclaughlin, and jay howell successes!

i saw a couple of weeks ago that randy wolf had signed through the mail, which led me to discover that the former dodger double dipper was attempting a comeback with the seattle mariners.  i quickly gathered a couple of cards and sent a ttm request to the mariners' spring training facility.  i don't know if wolf signed his 2010 topps card before or after he parted ways with seattle, but i am glad that he did.  

i don't think he has caught on with another team yet, but here's hoping he is able to complete his comeback attempt somewhere.

the same day that the wolf card came back to me, i had a 1978 topps card in my mailbox as well.  thanks to bo mclaughlin

who is currently the bullpen coach for the colorado rockies.

a third ttm request showed up redeemed the next day.  it was a 1988 topps traded jay howell card

this was the third success that i have had with the former dodger reliever, and it fills a gap in my topps dodger autograph project.  as you might recall, i tried to secure at least one signed dodger card (ideally freely obtained through the mail) for each topps flagship set, starting with the 1951 red/blue backs, without repeating a player.  i don't consider update series official requirements of the project, but note them if i have them, and i didn't have anyone sign their '88 traded set yet even though tim belcher, alfredo griffin, and howell had signed cards for me in the past. thanks to jay howell, now i do.

i enjoy getting mail.  i always have.  over the last few years, i have especially enjoyed seeing self addressed stamped envelopes in the mailbox.  that's because they usually contain autographed cards.  the most recent of these envelopes came from the twins' spring training home thanks to former dodger pitcher ricky nolasco.  i had sent a copy of his 2014 topps card

and his 2013 topps update card

to fort myers in the hopes that he would sign them, and he did!  what's even more awesome about this is that it fills the requirement of my topps dodger autograph project for 2014.  as you might recall, i tried to secure at least one signed dodger card (ideally freely obtained through the mail) for each topps flagship set, starting with the 1951 red/blue backs, without repeating a player.  now, i could count nolasco's 2013 topps update card as part of the project (i don't consider update series official requirements of the project, but note them if i have them), but i don't know if i will send out any other 2014 cards so i will skip the update set for now.

there was a similar pwe in my mailbox a few days prior to the nolasco envelope.  it contained a 1964 topps dick calmus card

signed by the former dodger pitcher and returned in just a few days.  unfortunately, there aren't any other topps cards of calmus (he has a card in the 1968 set, but is featured as a cub) so i just sent the one.  

like nolasco, some of the players noted above as part of the topps dodger autograph project signed more than one card, and i realized that i have not shown some of them.

edwin jackson is part of the project thanks to his 2004 topps card, but he also signed a 2005 card for me.

likewise, delwyn young is up there for his 2008 topps card, but he also signed a 2003 topps 206

and a 2007 topps card

as did juan pierre, who made the project thanks to a 2010 topps ttm success.

pierre also signed one of his 2008 upper deck cards

probably my favorite card of his, as well as his 2009 topps card

not all dodger ttm successes made the project, obviously, and here is one that fell short - a 2007 topps luis gonzalez

last, but not least, is a card that is ineligible for the project (it's not a topps card), but is a cool ttm success nonetheless - a 2007 upper deck mike lieberthal card

filling in a gap - a topps dodger autograph project update

i was happy and surprised to see a small saspwe in my mailbox yesterday.  outside of that mike schmidt ttm request, i haven't mailed any out recently.  my outstanding steve garvey request will (hopefully) make it's way back in a larger mailer.  anyway, the card inside was this 1985 topps traded mariano duncan card

that's cool for many reasons - first, i sent it in september of 2012 c/o the tennessee smokies where duncan was a coach, but it came back postmarked from orlando.  second, it's a great card with the rookie duncan taking a lead under the watchful eye of lurking coach joe amalfitano.  third, it fills a gap in my topps dodger autograph project.

as you will recall, i tried to get a signed copy of a dodger card from each year of topps cards through the mail.  i didn't count traded sets towards the completion of the project, but they were nice to have.  and, with this duncan, if i were to count the traded and update sets, the project would be complete through 1988 topps.

well, that was quick. sort of.

i've sent out a few 2013 topps dodger cards in the hopes that some players will sign and return them to me.  yesterday, i received one back - randy choate signed his card for me from the saint louis cardinals' camp in west palm beach.

actually, the postmark was from west palm beach, but the cards train a little to the north of there in jupiter.

there was one weird thing with this return, however.  it was postmarked 2/23/13, and i received it on 3/11/13.  there were not one, but two of those little yellow stickers on the envelope that said 'unable to forward'.  now, you would think that i had the common sense to properly fill out a self-addressed stamped envelope, and when i peeled the stickers off, i saw that in fact i did address it correctly.  i don't know why it couldn't be delivered without those stickers, but i am thankful that they were able to use the return address.

i've often wondered about not putting a stamp on the sase since i use my address both for the 'to' and 'from' addresses.  but i wouldn't cheat the good ol' usps like that.  as long as they keep delivering my mail.

the topps dodger autograph project - updated!

a couple of weeks ago, franklin stubbs signed and returned a 1986 topps traded card for me.

while stubbs has signed for me before, this is the first card from that set that i have received signed.  so, it fills a void in the topps dodger autograph project, even though i don't count the traded sets towards the completion of the goal of having (at least) one card signed by a different dodger from every topps flagship set.  still, if i had 'em, i listed 'em in the tally.

this is kind of an odd card in that stubbs did not switch teams, and was not a rookie in 1986.  he debuted in 1984, got cards from topps and fleer in their 1985 flagship sets, and was featured in the 1986 donruss set.  topps left him out of their set that year because he only played in 10 games during the 1985 season.  in 1986, however, he was the dodgers' primary left fielder, so they figured he was worth adding to the traded set.

i like the card - it reminds me of the 1979 topps steve garvey card with marc hill behind the plate.

the topps dodgers autograph project - the end of the road

here is the final installment of the topps dodger autograph project - a project that was completed in a sort of happenstance way.  i sent out a bunch of ttm requests, and eventually got back a card from each year that topps has put out cards, with the exception of just three - 1951, 1954, and 1955.  i don't count traded or update sets, but when i have a card from those sets, i add it to the list.  also, no player appears on the list more than once.

this card, you might recall, was the result of a 50/50 ttm trade i made with reader cory.  quite a good haul there.  i have also received signed 2009 topps cards from juan pierre, clayton kershaw (as part of that same 50/50 deal, and joe torre.

the only other 2010 update card i have had signed through the mail was courtesy of hong-chih kuo, who actually signed two 2010 topps update cards for me (base and all-star).

speak of the devil.  h-ck is also the only dodger to sign and return a copy of his 2011 topps card.

2011 topps update & highlights, matt guerrier

guerrier was known as a good signer when he was with the twins.  he signed for folks before games quite a bit.  jerry sands has also signed and returned his card from 2011 update for me.

2012 topps, nathan eovaldi

i didn't get this card back until i sent it to eovaldi c/o the marlins.  it was the second attempt i had made, with the first one going to the dodgers early in the season.  i was happy to see it come back (in september, i believe) as it is the only 2012 topps card that i have had successfully had signed.

this one came back just the other day, and is also the only example i have of a 2012 topps update signed card.  i am really hoping that adam kennedy gets around to sending his card back to me sometime soon, though.

the topps dodger autograph project - 2005 through 2008

time for the next installment of the topps dodger autograph project.  these cards were signed free of charge through the mail.

2005 topps, chad billingsley

bills has signed a few cards for me through the mail.  i've also received cards from this set signed by edwin jackson and milton bradley.  however, that billingsley card above (which also features the guy i thought was going to be my baseball jesus, joel guzman) was obtained in a 50/50 ttm/trade event i had with reader cory a couple of years ago.  there are more from that fantastic transaction to be showcased in this and the next post.

2005 topps update & highlights, jason phillips

phillips signed this card for me while he was serving on the mariners coaching staff.  he might still be there, i don't know for sure.  i've also had success with blake dewitt and jose valentin from this set

2006 topps, bill mueller

topps didn't photoshop mueller for the flagship set, but the team was changed to 'dodgers'.  jim tracy and jason phillips are the only other 2006 topps dodgers who have signed for me through the mail.  i recall seeing a mueller ttm success in which the sender asked him a question along the lines of 'what does it take to be a big leaguer?'  mueller's answer was 'you have to fall in love with preparation'.  i like that quote, and have actually used it a couple of times.

other ttm successes i have had from this set include chad billingsley, luis gonzalez, juan pierre, and delwyn young.  plus a i have a purchased grady little signed 2007 topps card.

2008 topps, delwyn young

in addition to delwyn (which was the result of a regular ol' ttm request), i also have a 2008 topps ramon troncoso autographed card from the 50/50 ttm/trade

although i have had a ttm success with blake directly, the card above came from the 50/50 ttm/trade deal.  in addition to blake, i have a card from this set signed by angel berroa that also came from that deal.  we'll see a couple more next time.
