today is president's day, and since george herman 'babe' ruth famously earned more money than president hoover in 1930, i will feature a card that salutes the memory of the bambino.
when ruth died in august of 1948, the yankees added a black armband to their left sleeves for the remainder of the season. here's a 1993 ted williams card featuring a young yogi berra sporting the armband.
yogi was 23 in 1948 and in his third season with the club. two years later, he won his first of three mvp awards. according to the baseball hall of fame, the next time the yankees would wear an armband wouldn't be until 1979 when they honored thurman munson.
