dodgers 2010 schedule

as most of you probably know by now, the 2010 schedule is out. the dodgers get to play the al east, including a trip to boston and hosting the yankees. i went to all three games of their first trip to boston in june of 2004 and had a great time, although i missed out on the yankees' trip to la that year. in 2010 i will definitely be in la to see the yankees.

i couldn't find any cards from either of the 2004 series, so here's a 2002 donruss originals of a red sox (trot nixon) in dodger stadium.as for the twins, they don't go anywhere too exciting, nor do their interleague matchups intrigue me, but they do have a new stadium, so that's nice.

i heart (cards from) halos

rwh from i heart halos recently sent me a bunch of dodgers in return for some cards featuring those angels of anaheim - it was an interleague/freeway series trade!

here are some highlights:

2006 bowman chrome nomar garciaparra xfractor 182/250

can't top the checkerboard! reminds me of vans and junior high. so sad to see nomar making spot starts. the twinkie announcers were talking like he was dead over the weekend.

1995 upper deck collector's choice se darren dreifort rookie class
little d was the personification of 'tremendous upside'. injuries suck.

1982 donruss ken landreaux once traded for rodney cline carew, this man caught the final out of the first dodgers' world championship of my lifetime.

1986 topps terry whitfield
i always wondered why the dodgers brought whitfield back from japan instead of re-signing dusty or reggie or even rick monday. i also wondered what that guy off his right hip was wearing and what he was doing in the dugout.

1989 topps mini leaders john tudor i believe tudor led the league in being traded for pedro guerrero.

1990 topps mini leaders jay howell this set is even less attractive in mini style.

2009 topps walmart black angel berroathis card is bad ass. like shaft playing shortstop.

2008 upper deck timeline chin-lung hu not as dark as the walmart card, but it scans that way. another need from my timeline quest taken care of.

2007 topps finest jason schmidt refractor 109/199

hm. stick with the blue refractors, especially for the dodgers.

thanks rwh! see you in the fall classic!

davey lopes through the mail success!

times two! the dodgers' long time second baseman signed and returned his base card
and the nlcs card in just 10 days back in april! i feel very fortunate to have received these, as i have seen posts indicating that recent ttm requests sent to davey c/o the phillies are being returned to sender.

it was strange seeing davey return to dodger stadium wearing a phillies uniform in the nlcs last year, although my senses have been dampened by seeing him in an a's, cubs, astros, padres and brewers uniform over the years. still, i think of him as a dodger first and foremost. there's not much to say other than davey was a big part of my early fandom, and i am grateful to him for signing these cards.

these are the 15th and 16th pieces in my modest 1978 topps dodgers autograph project.

here's the tally:

16/29 = 55%

thanks davey!

pat neshek through the mail success!

i have sent a few ttm requests to pat neshek while he rehabs down in fort myers, and figured i should post the bounty, especially since he just celebrated his 29th birthday a week ago. how do i know? because he added his birthdate and hometown to this 2008 topps allen & ginter state card!he curiously did not add the stitches or his number to his auto, though.

here's his base 2008 topps a&g with his typical sig

and the mini2009 a&g

and the mini2009 topps base and, just to mix things up, 2008 upper decknot so good for autos.

finally, a 2006 topps '52here he added the stitches to his facsimile auto. nice!

thanks pat! and happy belated birthday! see you at target field in 2010!

tom haller and the team collector dilemma

i posted a while ago about a dilemma i faced as a team collector. that post had to do with the 1975 topps world series cards and whether they belonged in the dodgers team binder, and i decided that only the card featuring the dodger victory qualified.

this situation, however, is different. i submit for your consideration the case of tom haller. 1972 tom haller. from 1968 through 1971, tom was a catcher for the dodgers. he was traded to the tigers in december of 1971 for cash and a minor leaguer - just enough time for topps to pull out the anonymous 'shot from below' and change the team name on his card from dodgers to tigers. fair enough, i suppose, they did the same thing with richie (dick) allen and larry hisle, among others. what makes haller different is that he also had an 'in action' card.

while there is no direct team identifier on the card or on haller's uniform (although the blue piping on the pants and the blue shinguards are telling), clearly he is featured as a dodger. the card itself features a play at the plate with a new york met, and is actually a pretty interesting situation. there's a head first slide, an elevated bat, and haller is about to turn around to discover that the player has slid around him.

i had always considered this to be a tigers card simply because of haller's base card, but i have recently realized it's not that simple. upon further review, it looks like a dodgers card, so it must be a dodgers card.

so, 37 years later, welcome to the topps dodger binder 1972 tom haller in action. we're happy to have you.

my 6 in 30

better late than never...

let's pick a random dodger binder and see what happens!

1981 donruss don stanhouse.
between dave goltz and stanhouse it's a wonder the dodgers ever got back into the free agent market. here, stan the man unusual looks like mr. noodle's brother, mr. noodle.

1975 topps mike marshall highlights. a great card with alston, russell and yeager lurking. 106 games. good golly.

1960 fleer zach wheat.in full cryptkeeper mode.

1980 tcma chuck dressen. no real reason to pick this card, other than it is so non-descript.

1969 milton bradley jimmie hall.a non-dodger. how did that get in there? i think jimmie was with the angels for this issue, although you can't tell.

1991 topps fernando valenzuela.his last dodger card. in a classic fernando pose. i sent this one off for a ttm a while back, successfully, i might add.

so there you have it - 6 cards that are easy for a dodger fan (and a jimmie hall) to love!
