there is a lot going on on this sheet from the steve garvey binders, but something is missing

i'm only posting about one sheet in the steve garvey binders today, and it's sheet 70:
those cards are:

1. 2012 topps triple threads unity relics emerald /18
2. 2012 topps triple threads relic autographs 'dodgers great' /18
3. 2012 upper deck sp signature edition autograph
4. 2012 upper deck sp signature edition season signatures quad 1981 world series champions (with davey lopes, dusty baker, and ron cey) /15
5. 2013 panini elite extra edition bloodlines (with ryan garvey)
6. 2013 panini america's pastime pastime signatures auto /99
7. 2013 topps chasing history autograph
8. 2013 topps million dollar chase autograph /268
9. 2013 topps allen & ginter framed mini relic

i think there are five different versions of the relic autographs from triple threads - different in that the cut outs for the relics spell different things. i'm glad i have the 'dodgers great' version, even if it comes with padre uniform material.

i am again somewhat disappointed with topps for not giving garvey base cards in the chasing history set, as well as the allen & ginter set, but i'll take the autos and relics anyway.

i noticed after scanning this page that the garvey card from 2013 panini hometown heroes is missing.  i know i have it, i guess i've misplaced it in one of my boxes.  i'll have to dig it out and get it in its rightful spot.  when i do, i'll update this (or another post).

here are the backs:
here we see garvey's son ryan (which is actually the front of the elite extra edition card).  the younger garvey was drafted by the phillies in 15th round of the 2011 draft, but didn't sign and wound up being selected by the rockies in the 33rd round the following year.  he spent three years in the minors, but was released by the rockies in march of this year.

motivated by minis

duane from democratic roadkill recently offered to send me some cards in exchange for some 2014 topps allen & ginter minis.  he really wants minis - so much so that he sent more cards than i expected, and i have been delinquent in completing the trade as i have tried to pick up a few more things to send in return.  here are some of the cards that duane sent.

he recently finished a 1960 topps set, so he sent some doubles my way.  fred kipp
danny mcdevitt
and john roseboro
it wasn't all vintage goodness (i'll show more of the vintage haul in a separate post) - there was some modern stuff, too.

i don't know that i've ever looked at the mike marshall and steve sax cards from 1989 score together at the same time, but they make for an interesting combination
as do these two cards from 2009 upper deck goudey - andre ethier, kirk gibson, clayton kershaw, and russell martin 4-in-1 red and green border
these cards remind me of sesame street.  russell martin is doing his own thing by wearing his headgear backwards.  and now the song is done.

minis are primarily what duane was after - he collects the a&g minis like nobody else - so of course he has plenty of extras.  here are a few from 2013 topps a&g that he sent - hanley ramirez, chad billingsley, ethier, and hyun-jin ryu
this stuff wasn't even the best part of the package duane sent, so stay tuned...

these also came from outer space

here are some more cards from my 'team' in the 'tribe cards from outer space' pack opening extravaganza hosted by david from tribe cards.  i mentioned earlier that one of my strategies throughout the season was to pick up middle infielders in the hopes of getting some double play turns.  i was successful a few times, and wound up with this 1993 leaf mariano duncan card
and a 1997 fleer rex hudler card
that were new to me.

my other draft strategies included dodgers (of course) and members of the teams of my youth.  players like elias sosa, who showed up in a 1981 fleer pack (or was it a repack?).
overall, i received quite a few expos.  mitch webster (former dodger) was an expo on his 1988 o-pee-chee card
and tim wallach (another former dodger) showed up twice in a 1992 leaf pack - regular and black gold
those cards, plus a couple others of the current dodger bench coach have been shipped out to new mexico already.

another expo that fit into my former dodger and middle infielder strategy was delino deshields, seen here on his 1993 leaf card
but the most welcome expo of my 'team' was vladimir guerrero.  i wound up with a few vladdys, including this 2000 pacific crown collection card
i might like the red hats more than the red, white, and blue ones.

here's a 1995 topps cyber stats parallel of felix fermin
i drafted him in hopes of some double play cards.  this bunting card is on its way to 2x3 heroes.

howie kendrick was another middle infielder added to my team.  he delivered a 2013 topps a&g regular and mini combo
i beat david to the punch in adding former dodger (and indian) casey blake, and so i wound up with this 2004 fleer ultra card
which also features the mel harder and larry doby memorial patches.

there aren't too many cards of aaron harang as a dodger, but i was hoping for one or two when i added him to my player list.  instead, i received this 2011 topps gold parallel featuring him with the reds
i'm not complaining, though.

thanks david!

i am also thankful for cards that show the double play turn at second base

and i am especially thankful for cub season ticket holders that broke their sga sets and sold them as singles for low prices.  that's how i got this 2013 topps cubs season ticket holder giveaway glenn beckert card
thanks to wrigley wax for bringing this card to my attention.

also from 2013, but more widely available, is a 2013 topps allen & ginter dan uggla card
horizontal a&g isn't the best.

here's a 2012 topps jason kipnis.
i've shown a couple of other versions of this card, but never the regular ol' base. until today.

here's a 2012 topps pro debut jeremy patton card
i believe that the muckdogs are in the cardinal organization. i saw this one while digging through comc one day.  it was cheaper on sportlots, though.

how about a 2009 bowman draft picks & prospects brian dozier?
doze made the move to second this past season and did alright.  2014 is his 'year 27' season, and i've got him on my sleeper list for my fantasy draft next year.

now is the time when we see some chone figgins cards - 2008 upper deck first edition
and 2005 donruss
here's fellow angel darin erstad, although he's on miguel tejada's 2007 upper deck team checklist card
and i will end the post with some phillies.  first, cole hamels on a 2008 topps stadium club card (a 1st day issue parallel)
next, a couple of jimmy rollins cards - 2005 upper deck first pitch
and 2004 upper deck
it seems like double play cards are cropping up at every turn.  i am thankful to the bloggers who send me new ones in trade packages (and emails with links to images of dp cards) - someday i will catch up and get my 'have' list to match my actual haves!

more cards taken

in addition to the charity group break hosted by topher at crackin' wax, i picked up a few cards from his 'take my cards' promotion.  a buck donation to big brothers plus a sase and i received a 2007 topps allen & ginter andre ethier card
a 2013 topps allen & ginter adrian gonzalez mini
with the a&g back
and a 2010 upper deck dodger stadium card with no logo on the back, but still plenty of info with words like 'wonderful', 'splendid', and 'all-you-can-eat'.
derrick hall is right, though.  no swimming pool.

thanks topher!

garvey makes it to ginter

last year, steve garvey was included on the topps gypsy queen relic checklist, and this year he makes the jump to the big time, 2013 topps allen & ginter!  no base card, though, just a bat relic
it's a super short print, too.  i think that the card is fantastic.  perfect, even.  topps used a great early photo of the garv.  it's just too bad that there is not a base card, too.  i realize that there are a lot of dodgers on the checklist already, but i would have been ok with a garvey card instead of another duke snider or even chad billingsley card.

another dodger not included in the base set, but with a relic card in this year's release is zack greinke
pretty sure he's been airbrushed into a dodger hat there.

i picked up both of these relics in a 25-relic lot for about $65.  although there have been a couple of other garvey cards that went for less than $30 and a couple that sold in the $50 range, i think that i probably will do ok once i liquidate the rest of the relics.

before i do that, is anybody looking for any relics in particular?  other than the garvey, of course.

retail therapy. with a nice pull

i had some time to kill this afternoon and found myself at a nearby big box retail store.  the one with the 'exclusive red parallels' in topps flagship products.  i actually needed a few items and, despite what the title of this blog might imply (the first part, anyway), i did not need therapy.  very happy.  that didn't stop me from picking up some packs of cards, however.  i took a shot on 2013 pinnacle, even though i had not seen what i had seen on the blogs so far.  my two packs were pretty meh.  i did get a team 2020 card of jurickson profar
and a base of the guy he kinda sorta will eventually replace, michael young.
you know, thanks to the lack of logos, patp may be able to convince himself that this is young in a red rangers jersey.  unless he looks at the lettering on the back too closely.

hey astros fans! there's at least one card for you in the set!  here's carlos pena.
although i don't think he's with the team anymore.  at first i thought pinnacle accidentally airbrushed his upper arm along with the jersey, but now i think he was wearing a compression sleeve.  the color is wrong though.  i think.  i haven't seen too much of the astros this year.

here's a joey votto parallel
i assume that this is the museum collection parallel.  cory snyder, what do you think?
he's not saying.  still, i assume that the votto is the mc parallel.

here's another insert i found in one of my packs - a ryan braun pinnacle of success
it's a clear acetate card.  i wish i had pulled an insert of somebody else.

i also grabbed a hanger pack of 2013 topps archives.  the insert in that pack was this rod carew 1972 topps bkb design card
the rest of the pack was not bad, with a lot of retired stars.  trade fodder all the same, however.

blasters of 2012 topps allen & ginter were marked down to $12.99 and i bit.  it was actually not a bad little blaster as far as inserts, parallels, and short prints go, but nothing spectacular.  in fact, the card that stood out most to me was this base adam dunn card
he looks like a float in the macy's thanksgiving day parade!

last, but not least, i bought a hanger pack of 2013 topps allen & ginter.  i already have the dodger team set, and most of the dodger mini relics, but what the heck.  i was pretty pleased to pull a super short print auto of college football coach nick saban.
roll tide and all that.  this card will pretty surely wind up on the bay unless there's a bama fan out there wanting to deal.

not a bad way to kill some time on a friday afternoon.  and yes, i opened all of this in my car in the parking lot.  how else would i have done it?

20 August 2013

ginter wax cracked!

these are heady days for dodger fans.  believe it or not, i was a little jaded last year after the big trade with boston.  that was not the 'dodger way' that i grew up with.  now i am happy to see the team in first place and looking forward to the remainder of the season and beyond.  besides, with all these marquee players on the roster, there are a ton of dodger cards in recent releases.  take 2013 topps allen & ginter as an example.

i received my haul from crackin' wax's charity case break.  the healthy stack of cards begins with this matt kemp box topper
and continues with a few complete team sets.  let's take a look at all the base dodger goodness in this set.

sandy koufax
jackie robinson
yasiel puig
clayton kershaw
paco rodriguez
hanley ramirez
chad billingsley
andre ethier
hyun-jin ryu
adrian gonzalez
josh beckett
aj ellis
duke snider
and short-printed matt kemp.
wow.  what, nick punto doesn't rate?  actually, i am kind of surprised that a few of those guys made the checklist.  14 cards out of a set of 350, not all of which are baseball players is a pretty high ratio - that's yankees territory!

here are the dodger 'across the years' cards that i received.

andre ethier
adrian gonzalez
clayton kershaw
sandy koufax
jackie robinson
and then there are the minis.

ethier
gonzalez
kemp
kershaw

puig
hanley ramirez black border
and jackie robinson
that would be the a&g back version
but wait, there are relics, too!

billingsley
gonzalez
ramirez
(not shown, a second ramirez relic)

and a full sized andre ethier
that is some serious checklist domination brought to you by the free spending dodger owners.  and, there are other dodgers on the relics and auto checklist that didn't get included in the base set.  i should have a couple of those to showcase later this week.  no autos for me, unfortunately, but i can't complain about this haul.

topher also included one more card, just for kicks i suppose.  a 2013 bowman platinum clayton kershaw
as if all that ginter wasn't enough.

thanks topher! can't wait for your next team case break!
