the next two pages in the steve garvey binder get us through 1978

here's the fourth sheet in the first of two steve garvey binders that contain the regular issue stuff, plus some oddballs that fit in regular sized 9-pocket sheets.
this sheet contains:

1. 1975 sspc
2. 1976 topps dodger team
3. 1976 topps
4. 1977 burger chef disc
5. 1977 hostess
6. 1977 hostess twinkie
7. 1977 kellogg's
8. 1977 o-pee-chee
9. 1977 topps

as you'll recall from the previous post, the 1975 sspc card is mixed in with the 1976 cards, since i used to catalog that set as a 1976 set.  now i call it a 1975 release based on the copyright date on the backs.  speaking of backs, here's the back of the sheet
which is best used to note the difference between the regular hostess issue and the twinkie version.  the twinkie card has that black bar on the back.

here's page number 5
which features:

1. 1977 topps dodger team
2. 1977 topps cloth sticker
3. 1977 topps cloth sticker nl all-star team/checklist
4. 1978 o-pee-chee
5. 1978 pepsi (trimmed)
6. 1978 sspc
7. 1978 topps
8. 1978 topps dodger team
9. 1978 wiffle ball disc

and the backs
the 1977 o-pee-chee card is more similar to the 1977 topps cloth sticker than the 1977 topps card due to the absence of the all-star banner, but you already knew all about those types of o-pee-chee variations, right?

there are a bunch of msa disc variations that i don't have from this span of garvey releases (with the others that i do own sitting in the oddball binder due to their size), but that's about all i'm missing here.  for some reason, both hostess and kellogg's left the garv out of their 1978 sets, which is unfortunate.

next up, 1979...

cut from the same cloth?

the dodgers have three cards in the 1977 topps cloth sticker set.  steve garvey (not shown), ron cey,
and don sutton.
all three cards use the same photo as their topps issues.  however, as strange as it seems, they most closely resemble their o-pee-chee cards.  the garvey card is missing the all-star banner, which was standard o-pee-chee practice in 1977, but more interestingly, the cey and sutton cards have their facsimilie autographs in the same spot as the o-pee-chee cards, which are different than the topps issues.  it's a minor variation, but it is quite prevalent in the o-pee-chee set.  i think it is fascinating, and wish that i could talk with someone who knows what all went down at topps and o-pee-chee during the development of the three sets.

my interest in variations led me to purchase another card from the topps sticker set - the tony perez card:
not only is it different from his 1977 topps card in team, photo, and autograph placement,
it is different in two of those three categories from his o-pee-chee card:
i was happy to see perez (sort of) smiling on the o-pee-chee card which features an actual photo of him in an expos uniform because my first experience with him as an expo was his 1978 topps card
on which he looks depressed. kind of like al oliver or charlie hayes.  cheer up tony, you've got variations!  that makes me happy at least.

updating the nefarious 9

i managed to acquire a few cards from the list since i last posted it, plus one i thought was on there but wasn't.

i found a 1977 topps cloth sticker checklist (national league all-stars, middle card, middle row) on the beckett marketplace for cheap, which is nice.
that was wanted card #2.  say hi to bill russell, steve garvey and half of rick rhoden.

i also picked up extra copies of the 1980 and 1981 dodger team cards, taking care of numbers 5 and 6. the rest remain.

the card i picked up that i really thought was on this list is a 1976 o-pee-chee tommy john - the last one i needed to complete my team set.  it should have been on there, anyway.

so here's the current list which will also be posted on the sidebar:

1 - 2003 upper deck vintage #81 kazuhisa ishii - a short print in this awesome 1965 topps knock-off set. i was watching one on ebay for a while, but never pulled the trigger. woulda shoulda coulda...

2 (up from 3) - 2004 fleer greats of the game steve garvey/vin scully. i have one in my garvey collection, but would love to try to get a dual ttm thing going.

3 (up from 4) - 1991 fleer ultra eddie murray.

4 (up from 7) - 1968 topps walter alston. the last card i need to finish off my 1968 topps dodger team set.

5 - 1978 topps zest manny mota. i had a line on one, but that fell through.

6 - 1991 leaf studio gary carter.

7 - 1991 o-pee-chee jose gonzalez.

8 - 1989 fleer tim belcher

9 - 2010 upper deck doug mientkiewicz

bonus non-dodger card - 1990 topps glenn wilson.  when you see the card you'll know why.

if you, or anyone you know, has any of these cards and send them to me, i will reward you greatly.

please, help a blogger out!

my magnificent 7 (or is it the nefarious 9?)

i am stealing this idea from dan at saints of the cheap seats, who stole it from the collective troll. no shame in stealing a good idea. anyway, these are the 7 cards that are mocking me from afar, yet to join my collection. if you have any of them and can help me out, please let me know.

1 - 2003 topps tribute perennial all-star #10 roberto clemente - i need this one to complete the set.

2 - 1976 topps #5 tom seaver record breaker - not the only card i need from the 1976 set, but i hate having an empty space on the first page in the binder.

3 - 2003 upper deck vintage #81 kazuhisa ishii - a short print in this awesome 1965 topps knock-off set.

4 - 1975 topps #473 ken mcmullen the one i have in my dodger collection is horribly disfigured as you can see.

5 - 1974 opc #575 steve garveyi have one in my garvey collection, but am missing only this card in the 1974 opc dodger collection.

6 - 2008 topps heritage high numbers #696 mark sweeney - a late season issue, and a short print at that.

7 - 1997 dodgers mother's/1997 dodgers police/1998 dodgers police sets, but specifically bill russell since these are his only cards as the dodgers' manager.

8 - 1976 sspc #594 checklist 6 (ralph branca, carl erskine, pee wee reese). some nice oldtimers from a non-descript set.

9 - 1977 topps cloth sticker checklist (national league all-stars, middle card, middle row). the one with bill russell and steve garvey and half of rick rhoden, among others.

wait, that's nine. oh well, they're all driving me crazy!

let me know if you can help me out with any of these!
