here's the next installment of sheet from the steve garvey binders

here are sheets 8 and 9 of the first of two main steve garvey binders keep us in his los angeles years, but just barely.  here's sheet 8:
these cards are:

1. 1981 o-pee-chee
2. 1981 permagraphic
3. 1981 squirt
4. 1981 topps
5. 1981 topps scratch-off
6. 1982 donruss (diamond king)
7. 1982 donruss
8. 1982 drake's
9. 1982 fleer

here are the backs:
the 'oddballs' on this sheet - permagraphics, squirt, and drake's - all have some topps influence to them.  the photo on the permagraphics card is the same on garvey's 1981 topps (and o-pee-chee) cards; the 'dodgers' text on the squirt card is the same as the 'dodgers' text on 1978 topps cards with the back being a firm reproduction of 1981 topps; and the back of the drake's card is clearly the same design as 1982 topps.

one thing to note - i maintain that garvey was not included in the team photo that appears on the 1981 topps dodger checklist/tom lasorda card.  so, i don't have that card in the garvey binder.  if anyone can prove me wrong, i'd be happy to add it.

sheet 9 looks like this:
those cards are:

1. 1982 kmart
2. 1982 kellogg's
3. 1982 louisville slugger
4. 1982 o-pee-chee
5. 1982 o-pee-chee (in action)
6. 1982 permagraphic
7. 1982 topps
8. 1982 topps (in action)
9. 1983 donruss

and here are the backs:
the louisville slugger card came attached to a baseball glove. it may be from 1981 (or 1980 even - garvey is wearing the 1980 all-star game patch in the photo as he is in the o-pee-chee and topps cards), but i put it here in 1982 since beckett lists these things as '1982-89 louisville slugger' tags.  there's one of the garv in padres gear, too, which we'll see in a future post..  i know i am missing the 1982 permagraphic gold card that would go on this page, bumping 1983 donruss to the next.  maybe someday.

it's getting a little dusty in here

i am enjoying going back and visiting the early days of dusty baker's managerial career in the 1978 topps dodger evolutionary posts.  i am also enjoying seeing johnnie b. baker in some recent card releases.  i bought a 2014 topps baker autograph recently,
as well as a 2013 panini america's pastime boys of summer auto

and i am looking to add one from this year's panini donruss or topps tier one sometime soon as well.  there are plenty of other baker cards to show from my collection in the meantime.  like this 1981 permagraphic all-stars issue
or a 1981 squirt card
that features the 1978 topps team font and position ball!  good for you, squirt.

here's a 1984 7-11 slurpee coin of johnnie b.
and one of his more recent cards - a 2009 topps ring of honor insert
i guess i am ignoring the fact that dusty has received cards in the topps heritage set in recent years (up to 2014, anyway) as well.  but those were cards of him as a red, not a dodger.  baker was, of course, also a brave, and here is his 1990 pacific legends card showing him in atlanta duds
for some reason, topps decided to go back to atlanta as far as dusty was concerned for 2014 allen & ginter
there were probably too many other dodgers in the checklist already.  like…

…his old teammates bill buckner
 and don sutton
and his former dodger manager, tom lasorda
plus there are the current dodgers that needed to be represented in the set, such as adrian gonzalez
zack greinke
clayton kershaw
and yasiel puig
among others.

so, i'll take dusty in a braves uniform from time to time, especially if that limits the cards of him as a giant.

annihilating the nefarious 9 - can you help a blogger out?

here's how the nefarious 9 looked the other day

1 - 2004 fleer greats of the game announcing greats steve garvey/vin scully
2 - 1970 milton bradley tom haller
3 - 1985 fleer #384 steve sax
4 - 1978 kellogg's tommy john
5 - 1993 upper deck sp #98 mike piazza
6 - 1988 drakes #26 pedro guerrero

7 - 1981 permagraphic all-stars #5 davey lopes
8 - 1993 opc premier #115 jody reed
9 - 2000 upper deck ultimate victory #105 koyie hill

it doesn't look like that anymore, as i knocked four of the cards off the list, including this 1981 permagraphics all-stars davey lopes card
the nefarious 9, of course, are my most wanted cards.  i keep the list not only as a way to (hopefully) generate trades, but also as a reminder to myself.  this time around, there were no trades that included any of the cards on the list.  that makes sense, though, because this 1970 milton bradley tom haller
is fairly uncommon.  it's not expensive - i got this for cheap on comc - but it's not something most people have in their trade bait piles.

same for this 1978 kellogg's tommy john card
i'm hoping maybe someone does have a 1977 kellogg's doug rau sitting around.

finally, i picked up a 1993 ud sp mike piazza card, with not one
but two
plays at the plate.  and a nice look at the tim crews patch.

i've updated the nefarious 9 list - somehow, there are two jody reed cards on thers!  please, help a blogger out!
