i've been meaning to do this for quite some time, however it was a review of brian's want list at highly subjective and completely arbitrary that proved to be the push i needed to get it done. you see, brian collects cards showing commemorative - not memorial - patches.
the dodgers have worn a few commemorative patches recently, but not nearly as many as some teams for whom there seems to be something worth celebrating pretty much every year. i'm limiting these posts to the los angeles dodger team, which means there won't be any discussion of the new york world's fair patch worn by the brooklyn dodgers in 1939.
well, aside from that 1961 fleer card, there won't be any discussion. this list also does not include single game patches, such as the jackie robinson day patch that has been worn on april 15 in some recent seasons.
the task is fairly easy, because the dodgers didn't wear any patches, especially team specific patches for quite some time after moving to the west coast. here's a year by year rundown.

old friend todd zeile makes an appearance in a trade package
i was noticing the other day that i've only featured todd zeile dodger cards three times on this blog since its inception in the fall of 2008. that's too bad, because i liked the guy. he joined the dodgers for the 1997 season and promptly hit 31 home runs - more home runs than any other dodger third baseman except pedro guerrero (a teammate of zeile's with the 1990 cardinals) who hit 32 in 1983. of course, adrian beltre came along and hit 48 in 2004, but that's beside the point.
i was lucky to have tj from the junior junkie include some cards of zeile in his recent trade package, so here's his 1998 fleer tradition card.
somewhere i have a dodger scorecard that features a todd zeile autograph. he was signing in the concourse at dodger stadium before a game in '97, and i partook. i remember the lady in line in front of me asked him if he knew steve sax. saxy hadn't been a dodger since 1988, and he hadn't played in the majors since 1994. zeile was taken aback by the question, and i think he was still trying to wrap his head around it while he was signing my scorecard. i was more impressed that he was a teammate of mike piazza's.
the strongest man in socal was also among the cards tj sent - here's a 1996 score select piazza lineup leaders card
this is not an insert, just another way to have more than one piazza card in the base set.
oddball time! this is a 1996 scoreboard all sport ppf (i don't know what ppf means) card of roger cedeno
there sure were a lot of roger cedeno cards in the late 1990's. he was traded to the mets in 1998 with charles johnson for todd hundley.here's a 2000 upper deck ovation eric gagne card
it says 'world premiere' on the side of the card, in case you were wondering. i don't think that really makes sense, just like the world series isn't really the world series, if you know what i mean.
relic time! 2003 leaf certified materials joe thurston mirror red game-worn jersey
thurston only played in 8 games during the 2002 season - all in september. i didn't think that the dodgers wore their blue alternates in an official major league game (as the back of the card attests) that late in the season, but i could be wrong. or maybe a spring training game is considered an official major league game.
there were a few more non-dodger/double play cards that need to be shown in the package, such as this 2014 topps update chris taylor card
and two from 2015 topps - javier baez
and logan forsythegreat stuff from a very generous source. thanks tj! keep an eye on your mailbox...

the evolution of the shortstop, part 2
it's been awhile and i need to finish off these position evolution posts. here's the second installment of the shortstop evolutionary chain - this time from anderson to izturis.
dave anderson (1984)
andy started 111 games at short in 1984, replacing the dean of the dodgers, bill russell, as the team's first primary shortstop not named wills or russell in 15 years. he hit .251, and the following year spent more time at third base than short. that's because the dodgers promoted mariano duncan.dave anderson (1984)
mariano duncan (1985-1987)
duncan appeared at shortstop in 123 games (120 starts) for the dodgers in 1985. he hit .244 with 38 steals and helped the dodgers reach the playoffs, although he hit just .222 in the nlcs against the cardinals. in 1986, duncan appeared in 106 games as the dodgers' shortstop, and while he stole 48 bases, his batting average dropped to .229 and he was losing favor as the dodgers' shortstop of the future. in 1987, duncan's average dropped to .215 and he played at shortstop only slightly more (538 innings to 499) than anderson. he was demoted to the minor leagues for the entire 1988 season, as the dodgers went out and brought in alfredo griffin.
alfredo griffin (1988-1991)
griffin, seen above admiring one of his mammoth home run blasts on his 1991 topps stadium club card, barely gets the nod in 1988 thanks to his 89 starts at short compared to anderson's 72 starts. he hit a lousy .199 on the season, and then was even worse at the plate in the postseason - .160 in the nlcs and .188 in the world series - but the dodgers won it all anyway. griffin had better seasons as the dodgers' primary shortstop in 1989 (136 games, .247 average), 1990 (141 games, .210 average), and 1991 (109 games, .243 average) before returning to the blue jays in 1992.
jose offerman (1992-1995)
offerman hit in the .260's in both 1992 and 1993 as the dodgers' everyday shortstop. unfortunately, he made 42 and 37 errors in those seasons respectively, earning his nickname 'e-fferman'. at least that's what i called him. he lost a fair amount of playing time to rafael bournigal in 1994, but still managed to be the team's primary shortstop. in his final season as a dodger (1995), offerman remained the everyday shortstop, and even made the all-star team thanks to a .303 average at the break (he wound up hitting .287 on the season). offerman was traded to the royals after the 1995 season, and kc immediately moved him out of the shortstop position and reaped the offensive benefits that followed. no joke - offerman averaged .306 over his three seasons with the royals.
greg gagne (1996-1997)
gagne came over from the royals after the 1995 season, but not in the offerman trade - it was his signing as a free agent actually made offerman expendable. over the course of the next two seasons, gagne missed only 52 games (that's what passed for stability at this position back then) and hit .253 with a little pop. he finished his career as a dodger, retiring after the '97 season.
jose vizcaino (1998)
mark grudzielanek (1999)
the g-man appeared in 123 games for the dodgers in 1999, 119 (118 starts) as a shortstop. he also hit a robust .326 on the season. yes, his 2002 upper deck card shown above lists him as a second baseman, and for good reason - he switched to second in 2000.
alex cora (2000-2001)
cora played short for the dodgers in 101 games in 2000 and 132 games in 2001. he didn't do much offensively, and was an average fielder, but jim tracy played him. like grudzielanek, cora later moved over to second base.
cesar izturis (2002-2005)
the dodgers went out and acquired izturis in a trade with the blue jays after the 2001 season. i recall hearing him advertised as a slick fielding prospect and so was not really surprised when he posted obp numbers below .300 during his first two seasons as the dodgers' primary shortstop. in 2004, however, his third year at the top of the depth chart, izzy put it all together, hitting .288 with an obp of .330 and 25 steals. he also won the gold glove that year - the first dodger shortstop to do so since maury wills in 1962. in 2005, izturis again was the dodgers' primary shortstop, at least until an injury sidelined him for the season in august. the following year, he found his starting job lost and was traded to the cubs for greg maddux.i'll wrap up the shortstop evolution in a couple of days. stay tuned.

location, location, location
it's nice to get out of the office. usually, however, my excursions include going from one office building to another. not like when i lived in socal and would stop at dodger stadium to mull around between meetings at disney in glendale and my office in newport beach. no, these days the closest i get to that is walking past target field in the skyway on my way to a meeting in an office building downtown.
well, i recently had a work related meeting at an office building that was literally right across the street from one of the local card shops. i didn't know that ahead of time, and as i got close to the building my card shop spidey-sense was sounding off. as luck would have it, i happened to arrive about a half hour early for the meeting and so forgoing lunch to kill some time perusing the bargain boxes in the lcs was a no-brainer.
i didn't find a whole lot of exciting things, but it was a nice way to spend a lunch break.
there were a few double play cards to acquire, like this willie bloomquist card
here's another blue jay taking care of business - yunel escobar on his 2010 topps card
neil walker's 2011 topps card shows him waiting for the feed from the left side of the diamond
and jason bartlett's 2011 topps card shows him making the pivot. pivot! pivot! piv-ot!
former dodger delwyn young jumps to avoid a sliding mark derosa on his 2010 topps card
while jimmy rollins stands his ground on his 2010 bowman chrome card
it's nice to see topps finest in a common bargain box, especially when it's a dodger or another type of card that i collect. like this 1998 jeff kent specimen on which kent is turning two.
among the non-double play cards that i picked up was this 2009 topps willy aybar card

and a john mcdonald card
both from 2011 topps update. i am assuming that mcdonald has turned two, otherwise he is completely missing the tag.here's another blue jay taking care of business - yunel escobar on his 2010 topps card

among the non-double play cards that i picked up was this 2009 topps willy aybar card
there was a time that i thought aybar might be the dodger third baseman for a long time. he debuted in 2005 after the departure of adrian beltre, and hit pretty well. ned sent him to atlanta in 2006, however, along with danys baez and some cash for wilson betemit, who did serve as the dodgers' primary third baseman for 2006. more accurately, he started more games there than any other dodger that year, but that was still less than a quarter of the team's games. i'll get into that a little deeper when i finish the 'evolution of the third baseman' series. someday.
anyway, i bought the aybar card because of the lurking derek jeter. note that he's wearing a black armband (for bobby murcer), but this card goes in the lurker binder, not the memorial binder. i'll find some other bronx bomber to represent murcer in the collection.
here's the lone dodger i rescued from the lcs that day, a 1995 bowman's best mike piazza card
i'll have to see if i can schedule a couple more meetings soon.
