i'd really like to find one more auto card from 2007 upper deck sweet spot classic for the steve garvey binder

here are the other two 8-pocket pages from my steve garvey binders. they contain the thicker cards that just don't fit in the standard 9-pocket sheets.  you'll see what i meant in the title of this post when you see these sheets.  here's the first one:

there are plenty more sweet spot classic auto cards to be had, too, as there are red stitch and black stitch and leather cards in various quantities out there, including a red stitch version of the former most wanted dual auto with reggie smith card.  i recently missed out on a leather version of the garvey auto, which is too bad becasuse i don't have one of those, and also because it would have greatly improved the feng shui of the sheet.  those two sterling cards are serial numbered 1/1, but there are a number of them.  there are both dodger and padre versions, and there are at least 36 of the dodger version, since i have one numbered on the back as "sgd36" and the other is "sgd10".

yes, the gold stitch/black ink card was a graded card when i obtained it. i've kept the grading info for posterity, but the card itself has long been free from its plastic cage.

once again, i have two versions of the marquee dual relic auto card because of the nice red patch.  speaking of patches, even though i only have the /99 and /75 versions of the museum collection card, i have seen versions from those print runs with patches on the ethier and/or kemp relics.  the /25 gold version definitely features patches from those two.

so, one more card would fill out the 8-pocket sheets nicely, not that they are too bad to begin with, i suppose.

bringing the steve garvey binders up to the present

steve garvey has maintained a presence in card sets since he last played in a big league game in 1987, and i am happy for it.  i don't have a lot of his recent cards - mostly due to the vast number of parallels - but i have some.

not much difference between the 2013 and 2014 museum collection relics, is there?  getting back to the parallels, there are three different versions of the 2013 topps tribute tribute to the stars, each numbered to 24, plus purple parallels of each numbered to 1.  lots more parallels of most of the other cards on the sheet, too.  i can't find any information on the 75th anniversary buybacks as far as which garvey cards were part of the buyback, but i am happy to have two of them.

only three cards on this last sheet as of now, although cards will get pushed as i add some 2005 donruss studio parallels and other cards that i've picked up in the last couple of weeks, and find that 2013 panini hometown heroes card that went awol.

an invitation from steve garvey and more via jaybarkerfan's junk

i don't know how he does it, but wes from jaybarkerfan's junk continues to find some great stuff to send my way.  he recently sent me an oversized package that contained this gem

i had never heard of sports america club, but i figure i would have signed up if i had been aware.  of course, that's when i thought it was a 1981 or 1982 endeavor, due to garvey showing up with a dodger hat on the front of the letter and the choice between donruss, topps, fleer, or 'other' as my favorite card manufacturer on the back.  however, it turns out that this was a thing in 1988 - the year after garvey retired.  here's an image of an actual sports america club kit that i found on ebay

note the presence of 1988 cards around the inset photo of garvey in a dodger helmet.  knowing it was from '88, i can say that i would not have joined, even though i was promised a personalized, signed photo of the garv himself.

wes also included a (sort of) bipping of kevin gross cards - four 1991 fleer cards

and a singular 1992 upper deck card

there was also a legitimate bipping of 2007 tristar prospects plus chris withrow cards

my collection went from zero of these cards to five in the matter of one package.

more cards of the birthday boy - 2013 was a big year in steve garvey cards

once again, happy 65th birthday to steve garvey.  i mentioned in the previous post that there were plenty of garvey cards to chase in this past year.  i wasn't kidding.  here are just a few that i have picked up.  first up, a big ol' slab of bat from 2013 topps marquee

jumbo lumber indeed.  

also from this year's marquee release, here is a quad dodger relic card featuring garvey with andre ethier, matt kemp, and sandy koufax

i actually have two versions - that one which is numbered to 75, and this one which is numbered to 99

the only difference between the two, other than the number and the foil, is that ethier's swatch is gray.  there have been a number of versions with various patches showing up for ethier and/or kemp - even at the higher print runs - but i haven't yet convinced myself to pull the trigger.

speaking of which, it took me a long time to pick up one of the 2013 topps tribute autographed garvey cards

i'm glad i finally found one at the right price for me, because it's a nice card.  as is this other auto from 2013 topps

garvey didn't get an unsigned version of the chasing history card, which i found to be odd.  i understand making the auto a short print (could topps actually be running out of signed stickers?), but at least make a base version.  anyway, the card has to do with garvey's 21-game hitting streak to open a season, which apparently is still a franchise record.

the pesky patch (and armband)

in august of 2012, johnny pesky passed away at the age of 92.  he had been a player, coach, manager, broadcaster and ambassador for the red sox over the span of 70 or so years, and was honored with a memorial patch and a black armband for the remainder of the season.

pesky's number 6, which had been retired by the club a few seasons earlier, was worn by the team on their left sleeves while at home - on both the home whites (as seen on this 2013 topps museum collection dustin pedroia card)

and the red alternates (as seen on this 2013 topps jon lester card)

on the road grays, the red sox wore a black armband in pesky's memory (as see on this 2013 topps craig breslow card)

the angels, who were visiting boston for the first series at fenway following pesky's passing, wore their own version of the patch for the august 21 game only.  you can see it in this getty images photo of albert pujols and ervin santana

while pesky was not affiliated in any way with the angels, it was a nice gesture on their part to honor a baseball lifer.  in 2013, the angels would do the same with stan musial.

pesky led the american league in hits in his first three seasons as a major leaguer; a streak that was interrupted due to service in the navy during world war 2.  he may be best known by baseball fans as the person for whom fenway park's right field foul pole is named, but pesky put together quite a baseball career, and as bud selig said in a statement after pesky died, 'a great american life'.
