walt weiss could turn a mean two

i still have a few more 1978 topps burger king dodgers/update cards to finish and post (dave stewart coming soon), as well as a bunch more gcrl cards that should have been, and double dippers.  i've also been slacking on my evolution posts - both of the 1978 topps dodgers and of the fielding positions. plus, there are a bunch of trade posts and through the mail successes i have in the works.  at some point, however, i plan to do a tournament to determine the best double play card of all time.  i expect the 1971 topps cookie rojas to score well (i will hold off revealing my personal favorite until the contest is underway), but i think this 1991 topps walt weiss card would pull a fairly high seed in the tourney.
6 years later, weiss was featured making the dp turn again, although not in as grand of a style on his 1997 fleer card
not to be outdone, billy ripken has a nice 1993 upper deck card
he also has a cool 1991 topps card, but it's not a double play turn.

the 1994 topps roberto alomar is one of my favorite dp cards
because of the brotherly element.  another nice card from 1994 is this luis alicea upper deck card
it's got mitch webster sliding in during a game at dodger stadium for goodness sake!  let's figure this one out.  webster appeared against the cardinals in three games at dodger stadium in april of 1993.  he struck out in his only appearances in two of the games (he was a pinch-hitter in both games) and went 2 for 4 in the third game.  alicea didn't appear in that game, however.  the cardinals came back to la in august, and webster again played in three games during their visit.  alicea played in all three games, too, but in the first game, there was no play with webster at second.  the next game, webster flew out in his only appearance.  the third game, on august 29, webster started and made his final at bat in the 8th inning.  he singled and was then the first out in a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of mike sharperson.  and there you have it.

i won't bother to research this card, mark mclemore's 1995 topps stadium club
even though it's got one of my favorite players, robin ventura sliding in.  primarily because mclemore was with the orioles in 1994 so this is likely a spring training photo.  maybe.  can't be sure.

i have a few more dp cards to feature before we get to the tournament, but don't worry.  i'll get there.  eventually.
